Applications for the 7th edition of the Jes\u00fas Serra Research Awards, promoted by Fundaci\u00f3n Occident, are now being accepted. These awards aim to recognise excellence in<\/span> research in the fields of nutrition, food, and health<\/b>.They are targeted<\/span> at <\/span>young researchers<\/b> working in centres, universities, and hospitals in Spain who have made <\/span>significant contributions<\/b> to the fields of nutrition, food and health, drawing from a wide range of disciplines such as clinical nutrition and metabolism, genetics and molecular biology, epidemiology, oncology, cardiology, food science and technology, and more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Every year, the awards recognise <\/span>the careers and research projects <\/b>of two scientists who have contributed to advancing our understanding of the impact of diet and nutrient metabolism in the prevention and treatment of diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular and neurological conditions. The Jes\u00fas Serra Research Awards are divided into two categories \u2014 <\/span>basic research and clinical research<\/b> \u2014 with a prize of <\/span>\u20ac50,000<\/b> each.<\/span><\/p>\n

Candidates must have been <\/span>working in Spain for at least three years and must not have reached the age of 46 by the application deadline<\/b>. However, in keeping with Fundaci\u00f3n Occident\u2019s commitment to gender equity, this age limit may be extended for those who have interrupted their careers due to the birth or adoption of children and their care during the early months of life.<\/span><\/p>\n

The call for applications for the Jes\u00fas Serra Research Awards closes <\/span>on\u00a0 20 June 2025 at 14:00 CET<\/b>. New Federico Halpern Science Outreach Honourable Mention<\/b><\/h3>\n

For the first time, this edition includes the new Federico Halpern Honourable Mentions for Science Outreach \u2014 two awards that <\/span>recognise the work of journalists, communicators, researchers, and content creators<\/b> who have contributed to rigorous and impactful communication on <\/span>advances in food, nutrition, and health<\/b>. With this new recognition, Fundaci\u00f3n Occident pays <\/span>tribute to Federico Halpern<\/b>, the driving force behind the Jes\u00fas Serra Research Awards and president of the Foundation until his passing in the summer of 2024. <\/span>It also strengthens<\/b> one of the Foundation\u2019s key aims: to bring <\/span>research closer to society<\/b>, <\/span>transforming the narratives<\/b> around food, nutrition, and health in the media, in medical settings, and in public discourse, so that its <\/span>impact can benefit more people<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Honourable Mentions, worth a total of \u20ac5,000, are presented in two categories:<\/span><\/p>\n
