La Fundaci\u00f3n Occident<\/a> naci\u00f3 en el seno del Grupo Catalana Occidente. Sus or\u00edgenes se encuentran en la constituci\u00f3n en 1998 de la Fundaci\u00f3n Catalana Occidente como fundaci\u00f3n cultural privada (Ley 50\/2002, 26 de Diciembre, de Fundaciones y Decreto 37\/1987 Generalitat de Catalu\u00f1a).<\/p>\n

La creaci\u00f3n de la Fundaci\u00f3n respond\u00eda a una necesidad concreta: canalizar las gestiones vinculadas con el patronazgo y mecenazgo que el Grupo Catalana Occidente hab\u00eda desarrollado a lo largo de todo un siglo.<\/p>\n

En 2006, tras el fallecimiento de Don Jes\u00fas Serra Santamans, Presidente y fundador del Grupo Catalana Occidente, se decide cambiar su denominaci\u00f3n por la de Fundaci\u00f3n Occident. Un merecido homenaje a la persona que desde un \u00e1mbito privado tanto hab\u00eda defendido unos valores y esp\u00edritu claramente humanistas en beneficio de la comunidad.<\/p>\n

En esta nueva etapa, la nueva Fundaci\u00f3n Occident ha relanzado la labor y el compromiso del Grupo Catalana Occidente con la sociedad, asignando mayores recursos, y, de manera destacada, con un ambicioso proyecto capaz de retornar a la comunidad una modesta parte de lo que \u00e9sta le aporta.<\/p>\n

La figura de Jes\u00fas Serra<\/h3>\n

Jes\u00fas Serra Santamans naci\u00f3 en Pont de Vilomara, un peque\u00f1o pueblo al lado de Manresa (Barcelona) en 1911. Fue una persona conocida sobre todo por ser el fundador del Grupo Catalana Occidente. Toda su vida se dedic\u00f3 al mundo de los seguros igual que su padre, llegando a ser en este sector una de las personalidades m\u00e1s relevantes del siglo XX en Espa\u00f1a.<\/p>\n

Poseedor de una gran humanidad pero tambi\u00e9n de una visi\u00f3n empresarial extraordinaria, durante su larga trayectoria fund\u00f3 empresas e instituciones de gran relevancia aportando a todos sus proyectos un esp\u00edritu positivo y visionario que le hizo merecedor de numerosas distinciones.<\/p>\n

Entre ellas cabe destacar la Creu de Sant Jordi concedida por la Generalitat de Catalunya o la Medalla de Oro al M\u00e9rito en el Seguro, la Medalla de Honor del Seguro de la Generalitat o la Medalla de Honor de la Ciudad de San Cugat del Vall\u00e8s, concedida a t\u00edtulo p\u00f3stumo.<\/p>\n

Jes\u00fas Serra era un entusiasta del deporte, tanto como promotor como practicante. Tambi\u00e9n destac\u00f3 siempre por su pasi\u00f3n por la poes\u00eda y la m\u00fasica, y por ser promotor de numerosas iniciativas empresariales, llegando a ser, por ejemplo, el \u00fanico miembro no docente nombrado Miembro de Honor del IESE.<\/p>\n
