In celebration of World Heart Day, Lina Badimon, an expert in cardiovascular research at the Institut de Recerca Sant Pau (Sant Pau Research Institute) and a judge for the Premios a la Investigación Fundación Jesús Serra (Fundación Jesús Serra Awards), shares the secrets of a healthy diet to prevent heart diseases.

Thanks to many years of scientific research, it has been proven that maintaining a healthy diet and an active lifestyle can help to improve cardiovascular health. For a healthy plate, experts recommend that 40-50% should be vegetables, 5-10% fruit, 25%  whole grains, and 25% healthy protein, including fish, poultry, legumes, and nuts. All accompanied by water and/or non-sugary beverages.

Without a doubt, the relationship between diet and health is complex because it is affected by numerous variables, some of which are not yet fully understood. Therefore, research into strategies for delaying and preventing chronic diseases based on dietary control is of the utmost interest because many of them, specifically those related to the cardiovascular/cerebrovascular system, are the leading cause of death and loss of quality of life worldwide.
